A Cambodian delegation led by the mayor of Sihanoukville Yun Min visited Wuxi on Oct 25 for talks about further cooperation on economy, trade and tourism with the city government.

The Sihanoukville special economic zone (SEZ), jointly developed by Wuxi-based garment giant Hodo Group and Cambodia International Investment Development Group, has made efforts to help poor people in Cambodia under the China-pioneered Belt and Road Initiative.

As the first of its kind, the Sihanoukville SEZ was developed through an intergovernmental agreement and bilateral coordination mechanisms between China and Cambodia.

Covering about 11 square kilometers, the SEZ has attracted over 100 companies, specializing primarily in industries such as textiles, garments, machinery, electronics, leather products and wooden flooring.

Huang Qin, acting mayor of Wuxi, welcomed the delegation and suggested more cooperation. "The two governments should continue to support the development of SEZ and search for more chances to cooperate on culture, education and the medical industry."

Yun expressed his gratitude for the long-term support provided by Jiangsu province and Wuxi city.

"Since Sihanoukville and Jiangsu province have forged sister province relationships, more economic and cultural communication and exchanges to deepen our relationships are welcomed," Yun said.

The Sihanoukville SEZ will also take advantage of opportunities brought about by the Belt and Road Initiative and Cambodia's industrial development plan for 2015-25. More projects will be introduced to form a complete industrial chain and enhance the competitiveness of the SEZ.
