On May 1, the 23rd day of the third lunar month, the commemoration of the 1,064th anniversary of the birth of Mazu, a sea goddess worshipped in China's coastal areas, and the Spring Ritual of Mazu was held on Meizhou Island in Putian, Fujian province. Representatives from Mazu cultural institutions worldwide, Mazu devotees, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the occasion and embrace a new chapter in the Maritime Silk Road (MSR).

The ceremony began with chimes, drums, and ceremonial cannon fire, accompanied by ancient music. The Eight Yi Dance, a symbolic ritual dance representing Mazu's spirit of protection and sacrifice for sailors, was performed. Colorful 25-meter silk banners from various nations along the MSR converged at the altar, symbolizing the harmonious blend of maritime and Mazu cultures.

Participants from nearly a hundred Mazu temples and cultural institutions in countries like Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines, as well as regions in China such as Shandong, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, attended the event.

Mazu, known for her integrity, kindness, and compassion, embodies traditional Chinese values. She serves as a symbol of spiritual strength for overseas Chinese facing challenges abroad and as a cultural link connecting them.

The ties between Fujian and Taiwan run deep, with folks on both sides "of the same lineage, with common gods, and sharing the same cultural heritage". This year, Fujian begins building itself into a demonstration zone for integrated development across the Taiwan Strait. It is also 15th anniversary of Mazu beliefs being included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The event aims to enhance Mazu culture's role in cross-Strait exchanges, cooperation, and the Belt and Road Initiative, fostering friendly exchanges and spiritual resonance among Chinese nationals and Chinese living overseas.
