BANGKOK -- Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) took center stage at the 46th Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS), captivating attendees with their advanced features, innovative powertrain technologies, and competitive pricing.

As one of the most talked-about presentations, the Yangwang U8, a luxury e-SUV from BYD Auto's Yangwang brand, stole the spotlight with its emergency floating capability as it drove into the pool and glided back out of deep water.

"It was really amazing, and I felt totally safe and secure," said Silk, a visitor to the BYD Lab, recalling her ride in the vehicle during the floating demonstration.

This model would be beneficial for Thailand, where some areas are prone to flooding during the monsoon season, she told Xinhua.

China's leading EV maker BYD was one of 54 automotive companies at the BIMS, where this year saw 14 additional Chinese firms joining the exhibition.

Jaturont Komolmis, vice-chairman of the BIMS, said the event has witnessed significant growth, driven largely by the inroads of Chinese automakers, which have positively impacted the Thai market and economy.

Vehicle bookings have seen a remarkable surge since last year, partly due to Thai consumers becoming more receptive to EVs, Jaturont noted.

According to the organizer, BYD achieved the highest booking volume during the 12-day event, which concluded on Sunday. Eight other Chinese brands also ranked within the top 15, reflecting a profound shift in the Thai automotive market, traditionally dominated by Japanese brands.

The EV segment accounted for over 65 percent of all vehicle bookings, the organizer data showed.

From compact city hatchbacks to luxury multi-purpose vehicles, Chinese automakers introduced a wide range of models at this year's motor show to meet diverse market demands in Thailand.

MG, a well-established brand under China's SAIC Motor, showcased the recently launched MG IM6, a premium e-SUV, in a move to expand its presence in the Southeast Asian country's upscale market.

The MG IM6 features advanced "crab-walking" technology, enabling diagonal movement for improved maneuverability in tight spaces.

"Its four-wheel steering is practical and not just a gimmick," said Bodin Skulkiat, a 50-year-old Thai customer. "The price point also appears competitive, given the features and materials offered."

Another Chinese carmaker, Changan Automobile, unveiled its new range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs), which combine an electric drivetrain with an onboard fuel-powered engine and generator to expand the vehicle's driving range.

"As an EV user for three years, charging infrastructure remains the key issue for me," said Somsak, a 67-year-old Thai customer who was exploring the freshly launched Changan Deepal S05.

"I am particularly interested in the REEV variant of this model, which provides confidence for long-distance travel without the anxiety of charging availability," he added.

The launch of Deepal S05 also marked a milestone for Changan, as it is the company's first assembled-in-Thailand model, joining other Chinese manufacturers like SAIC, Great Wall Motor, BYD, and GAC.

Jaturont expressed optimism about the future of the Thai auto industry, especially with more Chinese makers establishing local production bases. He said this move enhances after-sales service and part availability, creates jobs, and reinforces Thailand's status as a regional auto production base and export hub.

Under the Thai government's investment promotion, the kingdom aims to convert 30 percent of its annual vehicle production to zero-emission vehicles by 2030 as part of its transition toward green mobility.
