Hainan Island Carnival returns in August with province-wide attractions

Hainan will host its 2025 Island Carnival from Aug 2 to 31, offering a month of ocean-themed events, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventures across the tropical island province, organizers announced Monday at a press conference in Haikou.
The festival will feature 39 events across Hainan, promoting a "one county, one brand" model to showcase local specialties.
Coastal cities, such as Sanya, Qionghai, and Wenchang, will focus on water sports, beach festivals, and marine culture. Sanya is offering discounted yacht tours and diving packages, while Qionghai's Tanmen Seafood Festival will combine fishing traditions with seashell craft workshops. In Wenchang, the Space and Ocean Carnival will include a rocket-themed light show and family-friendly beach activities.
Inland destinations are highlighting retreats from high temperatures. Wuzhishan will host a Red Canyon Rafting Carnival, pairing whitewater rafting with suspension bridge walks, while Baoting will offer rainforest hikes and Li and Miao cultural experiences as part of its Seven Fairies Hot Spring Water Fun Festival.
Haikou, the primary host, will launch the festival on Aug 2 with an opening ceremony at Funbay, featuring live performances, watersports demonstrations, and large-scale art installations along the coastline. The event will showcase Hainan's tropical charm and boost summer tourism.
Organizers say the festival is designed to attract domestic and international visitors with a blend of leisure, culture, and adventure.
A broader summer tourism campaign was also launched on July 1, offering 40 million yuan ($5.5 million) in subsidies for domestic travellers and locals.
