Sky's the limit in healthcare, GE chief says, outlining company's investments

By Du Juan in Tianjin (China Daily) Updated: 2014-06-13 07:11

Calling General Electric Co the "coolest" company in the world, Jeffrey Immelt, chief executive officer of the United States-based technology and industrial manufacturing giant, said he won't set any limits on what the company can do in China.

GE opened a new medical product manufacturing facility on Thursday in Tianjin, where Immelt spoke.

"China's healthcare market is the most diversified market in the world," said Immelt. "We will continue to invest in this dynamic market to meet the growing need in China, which is a very important market for us."

The new plant, which cost $100 million, will focus on magnetic resonance imaging devices and other imaging products.

China's healthcare market offers huge potential for GE, but it is just one of the many businesses that the company has in the market.

"A lot of changes in China are underway, including economic transformation and reform of State-owned enterprises. GE has to adopt new strategies in the coming years to fit the market change," said Immelt.

To diversify the ownership of State-owned companies that often dominate key industries such as energy and utilities, the Chinese government has moved to introduce private capital into these industries.

Immelt said GE is quite open to possibilities and committed to follow the market wherever it goes.

"We will strengthen our partnership with Chinese SOEs," he said. "Meanwhile, we will participate more in big trends like clean energy."

GE has participated in the aviation, energy, railway and healthcare industries in China.

According to the company, it had sales revenue of $7 billion in China for 2013. Immelt estimated that the company's growth will be about 10 percent in 2014.

China has been working to increase the output and use of natural gas in recent years in order to boost industry and cut carbon emissions. GE has discovered this trend will bring significant opportunities to the company.
