Namibia added to China's approved tourism destinations

China will grant Namibia approved destination status for Chinese tourists, it was announced yesterday.

The announcement was made during talks between visiting Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.

Eight African countries, including Kenya and Zimbabwe, opened their travel markets to China at the end of last year, while Egypt and South Africa signed travel agreements with China in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

Including newly approved Namibia, a total of 12 African countries are now approved destinations for Chinese tourists.

Tourism insiders predict that Africa will be a growing tourism market for Chinese travellers since the continent offers a totally different experience to Europe and North America.

The two leaders also witnessed the signing of three accords on extradition agreements, trade co-operation and military college assistance after a one hour closed-door dialogue at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Pohamba started his five-day visit to China last Friday in Hainan, the country's southernmost island province, and then went on to visit Chongqing municipality. He arrived in Beijing yesterday.

It is his first China tour since assuming the presidency in March.

President Hu emphasised that Pohamba's visit was testimony and reaffirmation of the ever-growing bonds of friendship, co-operation and solidarity between the two countries and people.

He said China is willing to enhance co-operation with Namibia in mining exploration, agriculture, fishing and infrastructure construction.

He also encouraged more Chinese companies to participate in Namibia's construction and development, and said the two countries are expecting to enhance co-operation in tourism and justice.

Pohamba said the fraternal ties have come about as a result of co-operation in many areas including trade, culture and professional training.

He said he was highly appreciative of the support from the Chinese Government and its people.
