Beijing steelmaker lures talents

Wanted! Talents in steelmaking, electromechanical manufacturing, real estate, and industrial park design, construction and management. Both Chinese and foreigners are welcome.

The Beijing-based Shougang Iron and Steel Group planned to recruit at least 81 talents both from home and abroad, the company announced Wednesday during a press conference.

The recruitment is part of the relocation and restructuring move of China's fourth largest steelmaker, according to the press conference.

In 2005, the central government decided to move Shougang's steel production to Tangshan in the neighboring Hebei Province before 2010. The decision was made to meet the needs of hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympics and of the further development of the capital city, said Zhang Guobao, vice minister of the State Development and Planning Commission.

Beijing vows to improve air quality in the run-up to the summer games and Shougang has long been blamed as the capital's worst polluter with chimneys belching out thick clouds of smoke.

The shifting of Shougang, located 17 kilometers west of Tian'anmen, can reduce the emissions of more than 18,000 tons of inhalant particles each year, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection.

However, that does not necessarily mean moving pollution to Tangshan, said Shougang chairman Zhu Jimin, adding that his company has developed plans to reduce pollution by a substantial amount.

After the relocation, most of Shougang's steel will be produced in Shougang Jingtang Integrated Steelworks Ltd, a joint venture with Tangshan Iron & Steel Group. Shougang will hold a 51 percent stake in the tie-up. It is also establishing a production line of cold-rolling sheet in Shunyi in suburban Beijing.

Shougang aims to use the shift as an opportunity to turn its focus to refining and top grade steel, making the recruitment of talent in this field imperative. The steelmaker is offering a handsome annual salary, as well as other benefits.

The recruits could receive an annual income of up to 240,000 yuan and get 300,000 yuan for the purchase of an apartment. The figures are remarkable in a country where the per capita income is only 11,759 yuan.

After the shift, Shougang's current headquarter will mainly engage in research and development, non-steel businesses and environmental industries. It will be incorporated into Beijing's urban development to create a "central recreation center" in the western region, earlier reports said.
