Dell executives were joined on Wednesday afternoon by Chengdu mayor Ge Honglin in the capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province for the groundbreaking ceremony of the company's new global operation site.

Located in the comprehensive bonded zone in the western zone of Chengdu High-tech Zone, the new Dell site is expected to become a key element in the company's growth.

Dell chose the site due to favorable growth projections and the country's commitment to build a world-class supply chain ecosystem in Sichuan, making it an optimal location to ramp and grow its ability to serve the needs of customers in western China and beyond.

Dell announced plans to open its second major China operation center last September. It will include manufacturing, sales and services operation. About 3,000 jobs may be created in the Chengdu site and neighboring areas when the center is fully operational.

The company's initial operation center is in Xiamen, East China's Fujian province.

As a world-class operation, the new site in Sichuan will employ Dell's gloval product development and design resources to provide products serving clients in government, large enterprises, small and medium-sized firms and consumers. It is expected to begin operation later this year, according to Tang Liang, an official with the Bureau of Strategic Planning in Chengdu High-tech Zone.

The new Chengdu site, in conjunction with the Xiamen center, will develop a global product supply system that will help satisfy domestic and global needs.

The establishment of the Chengdu site will help attract worldwide suppliers to the Chengdu area, which will help local suppliers in Sichuan increase their ability to expand services globally. The Chengdu site is expected to spur additional manufacturing industries in Sichuan, and help create a more comprehensive supply chain and distribution system in the region.

On the strength of the talent pool, distribution infrastructure and supporting policies of the region, Sichuan is the best choice for our investment. The groundbreaking ceremony of the Chengdu site shows Dell's commitment and determination in its goal to have a firm root in the Chinese market, said Dell China Chairman Amit Midha.

China is Dell's second largest revenue producing country after the United States. From fiscal year 2000 to 2010, Dell China's revenue grew 11 fold.
