Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has tightened security checks at entry ports to curb weapons smuggling, the city's customs authorities told Xinhua on Friday.

According to the Urumqi Customs, security checks have been stepped up for individuals, luggage, transport facilities and postal deliveries at land border crossings.

Xue Jinlou, head of customs, said they will destroy trafficking networks and eliminate weapons smuggling risk in the region.

Vehicles are prohibited to park within 100 meters around schools in Urumqi, ts.cn reported, citing the local public security bureau. Police will also enforce security near campus to protect primary and middle school students.

Five suspects among those killed in Xinjiang bombing

Five suspects "blew themselves up" in an attack on an open market in China's troubled Xinjiang region which killed 31 people on Thursday, state media said on Friday.

Authorities are investigating whether the suspects had accomplices.
