Disagreements between China and the US should not be magnified, and President Xi Jinping's planned visit to the US this fall is expected to include a "productive discussion" with US President Barack Obama, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday.

Wang made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.

"China and the United States are two large countries. It is impossible for them not to have any disagreement. And these disagreements will not disappear the moment we commit to build a new model of relations for major countries," Wang said.

"But we shouldn't magnify the problems through a microscope; rather, we should use a telescope to look to the future and make sure we move forward in the right direction."

President Xi will pay a state visit to the US this September. Xi accepted Obama's invitation in a February telephone call.

"We expect the presidents of our countries, following their Yingtai meeting, to have another productive discussion and inject new momentum into our efforts to build a new model of major country relations between China and the United States," Wang said.

Building such a new model of relations is a "pioneering effort", Wang said.

"It will not be smooth sailing, but it is a logical development because it involves a common interest for both sides and reflects the trend of our times," Wang said.

The minister used a Chinese saying to stress his point: "Sincerity can work wonders."

"As long as the two sides show sincerity, champion the bottom line of 'no conflict and no confrontation', and cement the foundation of mutual respect, then we can explore the immense possibility of win-win cooperation between China and the United States," Wang said.
