The Shahu Lake Tourism Resort, some 56 km north of Yinchuan, borders on the Yellow River to the east and the Helan Mountains to the west. A state-level nature reserve for waterfowl, the area has 895 ha of water, 1,837 ha of marshland, and 1,515 ha of desert with shifting sand dunes.

It is home to 140 varieties of animals and over 100 kinds of birds, numbering over 100,000 in all.
