Chinadaily.com.cn launched a live broadcast via mobile phone of the match between China and Iran at the current Asian Championships in Qatar Thursday, September 8.

It is the first ever broadcast of a sports match by Unicom, China's second largest mobile telcom operator. The channel is a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) gateway co-supported chinadaily.com.cn and and the Jinhuan Tianlang Co.

Between 2:30pm to 4:30pm, Thursday, as China takes on Iran, their first group foes, " Sai Shi Feng Yun" saw its visitors soaring ten times over the usual 2,000 daily peak value.

Due to its unique “anytime, anywhere” qualities, cell phones have become the darling of youngsters, said Zhang Ping, president of chinadaily.com.cn, adding WAP services will play a much bigger and more crucial role in the competition for mobile time.

Chi Hai, director of Beijing-based Jinhua Tianlang, said his company will invest more on other high-tech applications to enrich the lives of mobile phone users.

It costs 6 yuan (less than US$1) monthly to subscribe to "Sai Shi Feng Yun", cheap in price but more informative than other phone media MMS and E-magazines. China Unicom, China Daily and Jinhuan Tianlang say they are fully confident in the profitability of living broadcast services.

Mobile phones have been acknowledged as the fifth media after newspaper, radio, television and the Internet.

Among the current 10 million CDMA subscribers accessible to mobile phone live broadcasts, 4 million are more active than others. They are the ones who are interested in trying on the brand new media, according to industry analysts.

Tip: What is WAP?

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is an open, global specification that empowers mobile users to access and interact with information and services instantly via hand-held wireless devices such as mobile telephones, pagers, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other wireless terminals.

The latest WAP version was published in 2002 by the WAP Forum, which was founded in 1997 by Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, and Unwired Planet. Since then, the industry group has developed rapidly with more than 100 members all over the world.

With WAP, people can experience colorful applications like news scanning, searching, receiving e-mails, and doing electronic business in a convenient and swift mobile environment.
