The Marsh Gas Project in Kaihua
"The piggery has done something good. They lay the pipe to provide manure for our farmland of 200 mu, which is more efficient than fertilizer," said Yan Yuegen, an old farmer from Tong Village in Kaihua County. "Look! My pachyrhizus grows well and I'm going to have a good harvest." The piggery mentioned by Yan is Kangli Piggery, which covers an area of 100,000 square meters and raises 4,000 pigs. In the past the piggery drained the waste water directly into the river after simple deposition, causing serious pollution to lower reaches of the river and the ground water. Since the beginning of marsh gas project in 2003, the piggery has solved the problem of water pollution completely. Furthermore, they provide marsh gas and manure for nearby villagers. In Huangshi Village of Kaihua, the water is clean, the trees are luxuriant and the air is fresh. "Since the start of marsh gas project, no one goes to fell trees on the mountain," introduced by Wang, head of the village. "At present every family raises at least two pigs. The hogpen is connected with the toilet and the excrement flows into the marsh gas pond through the pipe. The environment in the village has been improved obviously." Zou Niangui, a villager of Huangshi, expressed his appreciation of the marsh gas: "In the past the smoke filled in the kitchen while cooking by burning wood and the wall next to the oven is blackened. Now, we can cook delicious food by the marsh gas without producing any smoke." The above villages are all experimental units of Kaihua's efforts to protect environment. They have become model units in the whole Zhejiang Province and their experience has been spread to other regions. |
