To the point

Say no to anarchism

Once again, anarchism showed its ugly face to Hong Kong people when violent protesters besieged and threw objects at Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying and his wife, forcing the couple to cut short their shopping trip in the New Year Flower Market in Causeway Bay on Monday.

Obviously, the anarchists in the city have yet to draw a lesson from a court verdict last month that found a middle-aged construction worker guilty of assaults after he whistled vigorously into the ears of five auxiliary policemen during a protest rally last July, causing temporary deafness in their ears.

These provocative, violent actions against the city's top administrator and dutiful police officers and the like have all been carried out under the disguise of "democracy".

Hong Kong people are guaranteed the freedom of expression, procession and assembly. But those rights come with responsibilities, the most fundamental of which is to follow the rules and laws.

However, in the dictionary of those anarchists, human rights mean only their own, having nothing to do with the rights of others; and democracy means complete disrespect for the authority and total disregard for the rule of law and order.

This is an extremely dangerous development that Hong Kong people should vigorously fight against to safeguard the city's social harmony and hard-earned economic achievements through decades of hard work.

Tolerance and connivance will be nothing else but encouragement for such anarchism, which will eventually threaten the sustainable development of our society and economy.

There have been many cases in some so-called democratic countries in Southeast Asia, where anarchism has not only destabilized their societies, but almost ruined the economy.

The prosecution of the above-mentioned construction worker and the court ruling on his case was a right move by the city's law enforcement authorities in safeguarding the rule of law and order, one of Hong Kong's most important core values.
