新西蘭高教局幾年前開始采用一種新的步驟來評估學校的成績，并根據實績進行撥款分配。這種評估措施與英國高教局的RAE評估方法有很大的共同之處。而新西蘭高教局也表明，其排名的構思理念在很大程度上借鑒了英國的成功經驗。在評估中，各校各科的人員會被分為如下四級：
A : world class B : very good C : good R : research inactive
