Around China Shaanxi Men detained over counterfeit money

Two 23-year-old men in Xi'an were detained recently for allegedly counterfeiting money and attempting to sell it via express delivery services. The men, from Qingjian county and both surnamed Hao, allegedly started using printers to make counterfeit money in May. On May 18, one of the men attempted to send counterfeit money in a package under an assumed name, arousing the suspicions of the courier. He reported the man to the police, who discovered fake cash in the package. The police detained the men two months later, and the case is under further investigation.

Man imprisoned for cheating girlfriend

A man who pretended to be a procurator to cheat people out of money has been sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined 100,000 yuan ($15,000). When Cheng Duwei, a resident of Neixiang county, entered a relationship early last year, he told his girlfriend he was a procurator at Zhengzhou city procuratorate. Between Feb 25 and Sept 8 last year, Cheng cheated the girl's mother out of 1.02 million yuan, saying he would use the money to buy a house for them in Zhengzhou. When the woman and her mother discovered the deception in November, they reported Cheng to the police, and he was detained on Jan 14.

Thief says stealing on metro 'easy'

A 56-year-old man in Wuhan who said he had stolen items from passengers on every metro line in the city told police that it was very easy to steal because passengers were not vigilant. The man, surnamed Li, who has been imprisoned four times for theft, began stealing again in 2013 after he was released from prison. He was caught recently when he tried to steal a smartphone from a woman whose device was protruding from her pocket.

Donated organs help seven people

The organs of a 22-year-old man from Jieyang who was killed in a traffic accident were used to treat seven people after his death. Wu Yuanxuan, a migrant worker in Dongguan, was seriously injured in the accident on Sept 3. When Wu was confirmed brain dead on Sept 6, his family decided to donate his organs, so his heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and corneas were used to treat patients in Beijing, Guangzhou and Wuxi.

Cashier duped by fake police call

A female cashier at a small company was cheated out of 1.27 million yuan ($191,000) by a telecommunication fraudster who told her she was wanted by the police. On Sept 10, the woman, surnamed Yang, received a phone call from Shanghai saying she was wanted by police for alleged involvement in a criminal case. The caller, who pretended to be a policeman, said the charges would be dropped if Yang deposited the money in a specified bank account. Later, Yang realized that she had been cheated and reported the matter to the police. An investigation is under way.

Official killed in boat accident

A governmental official in Ziyang was killed on Sept 11 in an accident involving a motorboat as he swam in a river. Cao Xiuguang, 53, deputy secretary of the city's Yanjiang district Party committee, sustained serious injuries in the accident and later died in hospital. Police detained the boat's driver for investigation.

Woman throws LV bags away

An elderly female scrap collector in Yizheng who discovered three Louis Vuitton leather bags threw them away, keeping only the wrappers they came in. The owner, a man surnamed Cai, mistakenly left the high-end bags, worth more than 20,000 yuan ($3,005) each, outside his shop on Sept 5. After viewing street surveillance footage, the police discovered that the bags had been taken by the scrap collector. When confronted by police, the elderly woman said she had thought the LV bags were useless and threw them in a dustbin. Officers retrieved the bags and returned them to Cai.

Men jailed for killing rare birds

Two male cousins in Xuzhou city have been sentenced to two years in prison, three years probation and fined 5,000 yuan ($754) for killing six rare birds with a slingshot. The men, surnamed Liu and Zhou, were convicted of illegally hunting rare animals and killing the birds, which are under State protection, on Nov 5 last year.

Driver '30 percent responsible'

A taxi driver in Shuyang county was judged to be "30 percent responsible" for a traffic accident. The taxi driver, surnamed Cheng, was driving on Oct 4 last year when he saw an electric tricycle stop in the road and sounded his horn. The driver of the tricycle, which was carrying five passengers, was startled by the sound. The vehicle tipped over, resulting in the death of one of the passengers. The victim's family brought a lawsuit against Cheng, and a court recently determined that he was "30 percent responsible" for the accident. Cheng was ordered him to pay the family 178,571 yuan ($26,770).
