A favorite dessert of mine is called Dough flower. Not only is it eaten as a dessert but it is looked at as a work of art. As the name implies, they are made of wheat flour, though it is sometimes mixed with glutinous rice flour to create greater stickiness. Dough flowers are usually served at din-ners between the dishes and are sweet in taste. Most are prepared by mixing natural, colorful vegetable juices into wheat flour, and they look particularly charming and delectable.

This specific dessert is very popular in the Chinese countryside, and those made in Luochuan which is northern of Shaanxi Province, are traditionally called Huamo or “flowery bread” by the locals of that region. Right before a festival or ceremonial occasion such as a wedding or a funeral, local women will without a doubt turn their thoughts to preparing dough flowers. Patterns are not needed, due to their very imaginative thoughts. This is a symbol of longevity for birthday parties of elderly people. They rest are dyed red and yellow to follow the natural ones.
