Abstract: The performance evaluation is the major leverage of the government and also a benchmark to measure leading officials’ performance. With the transformation of economic growth from a high-speed mode to a high-quality one, the performance evaluation system in China has played an important role in pushing ahead with cultivating a high-quality performance in officials’ career, improving government work style, fostering governance modernization and motivating officials to fulfill their duties. In the new era, efforts need to be made to focus on a high-quality development mode based performance evaluation system, flesh out performance evaluation system and supporting institutional system, establish a scientific, systematic and multi-layered government performance structure, amplify a pluralistic performance evaluation entity to fully assess the government’s efficiency and the satisfaction of the public in a multi-dimensional and multi-perspective manner. Besides, attention needs to be paid to enhancing the procedures of the performance evaluation on government work and strengthening the supporting role of new technology and big data so as to heighten the transparency and fairness of performance evaluation. In addition, emphasis needs to be placed on the application of the evaluation result in order to give bigger play to the guiding and supporting role of the performance evaluation system and the incentive mechanism on officials’ work in pursuing a high-quality development.
