Finnish papermaker builds sustainable future across world

By Zhuan Ti (China Daily) Updated: 2015-10-28 07:50

Through the renewal of its biotech and forest industries, UPM - a Finnish pulp, paper and timber manufacturer - is building a sustainable future. Across the six business areas of biorefining, energy, UPM Raflatac, UPM Paper Asia, UPM Paper Europe and North America, and UPM Plywood, its products are made of renewable raw materials and are recyclable.

With production plants in 13 countries and a global sales network, the company's sales totaled 9.9 billion euros ($11.2 billion) in 2014. It has 20,000 employees working in 45 countries across six continents.

Headquartered in Finland, UPM focuses on Europe, North America and Asia, particularly China, as its major markets. The company is listed on the NASDAQ Helsinki stock exchange.

China has become one of the most important markets in the UPM global strategy and the company has established an Asian production base in Jiangsu province.

Occupying nearly 185 hectares of land in the Jiangsu Changshu Economic Development Zone, it has facilities for production, research and development, power generation, environmental protection, and warehousing and transportation.

The UPM Changshu Mill is a large-scale production plant for fine paper that produces graphic paper and office paper, as well as a key production base in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Changshu mill has two papermaking machines with an annual capacity of 800,000 metric tons of fine paper. Its product lineup includes graphic paper and copy paper. The aggregate environmental protection investment in the Changshu paper mill has reached 400 million yuan ($63 million) with excellent environmental performance.

UPM is also developing its labels, plywood, timber and pulp business in China.

The third papermaking machine at the Changshu mill will start up by the end of this year. The new machine will produce high quality labeling materials and wood-free uncoated paper.

With its investment in this machine, the company is strengthening its leading global position in labeling materials.

'My Chinese Working Day': An Australian's story

For a scholar focusing on Australia's public diplomacy, working as a recreational manager in China may never be part of his career path. But Bradley McConachie does have lots to say now about his special experience at a resort in the picturesque tropical coastal city of Sanya in South China's Hainan province.
