Chinese rescue team on way to Nepal as toll exceeds 1,000

A massive earthquake measuring 8.1 magnitude struck 80 km (50 miles) east of Pokhara in Nepal on Saturday. China Daily Website delivers the latest updates on the quake.

The death toll in Nepal has risen to 1,130, a police spokesman said, according to Reuters.

Of the total, 634 were reported dead in the Kathmandu Valley and at least 300 more in the capital.

23:06 18 people found dead on Mount Qomolangma

An Indian army mountaineering team has found 18 bodies on Mount Qomolangma, an army spokesman has said.

Gyanendra Shrestha of the country's tourism ministry told Reuters that the death toll could rise. He confirmed that the avalanche had buried part of the base camp and two tents had been filled with casualties.

Ministry officials estimated that at least 1,000 climbers, including about 400 foreigners, had been at base camp or on Qomolangma when the earthquake struck.

22:20 China sends rescuers to Nepal

A group of Chinese international rescue team will be sent to Nepal for humanitarian aid, according to the People's Liberation Army Daily. The group includes 40 rescuers and six sniffer dogs.

All the rescuers have taken part in domestic operations and about 20% have foreign experience.

Leader of Chinese Women's Mountaineering Team, Ma Liyamu, who was reported to have lost contact, is now in touch. She was injured in the avalanche triggered by the earthquake.

Ma and her team have not yet come back to the base camp from Mount Qomolangma, also known as Everest in the West.

A total of 13 residents in Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region are dead, including six from Gyirong county and seven from Nyalam county.

The electricity in Gyirong is out. And nearly 70% of Nyalam's buildings are damaged or have collapsed.

21:27 HK residents stranded in Nepal

China's Hong Kong Travel Industry Council said that more than 30 Hong Kong tourists are stranded in Nepal after a powerful earthquake hit the country.

According to the Travel Industry Council, these tourists are from two package tours organized by two different Hong Kong travel agencies. All of them are safe and now stranded in Kathmandu's airport.

Nepal quake death toll reached 876, according to Nepal's Home Ministry.

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit different parts of the country including the Kathmanthu Valley, demolishing a large number of buildings, including the historic Dharahara, the highest tower there.

The number of the injured and the loss of lives and properties are yet to be determined.

20: 54 Nepal appeals for intl humanitarian assistance

More than 180 bodies have been retrieved from debris of Nepal's highest Dharahara Tower after it collapsed in the earthquake. The government has declared a state of emergency in the affected districts, according to the BBC.

Deputy Prime Minister Bamdev Gautam has appealed for international humanitarian assistance.
